Chapter 18

Zhuri receives a call from Jay the next morning. Unlike what he has said, the mystery man wants to meet her eagerly. He has invited her and Cara's father to the cathedral outside the town. She tells Dave about it, and they both reach the church.

From the outside it looks similar to a horror movie set. It's in the middle of nowhere, and it doesn't seem like anyone will ever cross this road.

The sunrays bounce off the dark walls of the cathedral, giving some hope it's not as scary as it looks. Apart from a few missing bricks on the fencing wall, the dried tree debris on the porch, and the haunting silence of the surrounding, everything else seems fine.

Sucking in the feeling of despair, she steps in through the creaking metal gate. The withered leaves rattle all around, either welcoming her or warning her at the entrance.

"I don't like this," she mutters.

"What?" Dave faces her.

Maybe she's being paranoid, but she has read too many stories to know buildings like this are not safe. She points at the decaying door above the steps. "Nothing good can happen in this place."

"How do you know that?" he asks, raising his brows.

He needs to stop forgetting she has read this story. "I know it's hard to believe, but I know your world better than you."

"Really?" he whispers sarcastically.

She waves her hand around. "The creator of this universe lives in my world."

"I don't care," he says, "we are going inside. I've my gun so don't worry."

He strides up the stairs and Zhuri follows him. The door opens with a thud as he touches it.

At the end of the hall, a pale, white-haired man gets off his chair. His long locks sways with every step as he rides down the pedestal. The rays peeking in through the cracked ceiling glint on the silver border of his baggy cloak. His bell sleeves hit each other as he steeples his fingers. Two pale, black-haired people, a man and a woman, in leather jackets and boots follow him.

"Welcome, wanderer," the white-haired man greets in a shrill voice and beckons them.

Zhuri's heart races as Dave grabs her hand and drags her towards him. In the right corner of the hall stands Eisa, tracing her movements. His demeanour is colder than usual. It's odd. Jay hasn't talked about Eisa in the morning. She looks at Jay, standing opposite to him.

"I'm Mordon, the protector of God's creations," the white-haired man says.

As Zhuri and Dave stop a little away from them, she gets gooseflesh as though the temperature has dropped, or maybe she's just scared. She scans the room. Every eye is on her, but it's not fear that's giving her chills. It's the presence of these people. Her breaths mist as she exhales forcefully.

"I've been told that you are lost," Mordon says sharply, eyeing Jay and faces Zhuri again. "Is it true?"

"Lost isn't the proper word." She pulls the sleeves of her Jacket, trying to fight the cold. "I know exactly where I'm, but I don't know how to get back.
